Haiti Team Journal (Part 10)

Saturday, March 30

Beach day!

We were up early, 6 o’clock, to make the one and a half hour drive to the stunning Indigo beach resort outside of Port au Prince.

What a stark contrast between city slums and the beautiful golden sand and blue, clear water!

We swam in the warm ocean, lazed on the sand, and played beach volleyball until the sand got too hot.

Then we ate pizza for lunch, kayaked,

snorkeled, drank refreshing drinks, and soaked up the sun.

Okay, probably too much sun, because that night most of us didn’t sleep that well because our skin felt like it was on fire! Perhaps we should have slathered on the sunscreen a little more!

Before we left, we purchased some paintings and jewelry.

On the way home, we saw an SUV in front of us that had hit a horse, which was still twitching on the road. A mob was gathering, so we hightailed it out of there.

The road, which is now nicely paved, is still dangerous, because you not only have to watch out for other cars, but also people, cows, goats, horses, and other animals crossing constantly.

Back in Port au Prince we stopped at a grocery store to pick up food for supper. After delicious tacos, we chilled and then tried our best to sleep with our burned skin.
